The mountain village of Simplon is located at 1.476m on the southern side of the pass. It has 330 inhabitants.

The architectural style of Simplon Dorf with its typical roofs of flat stones is special.

The town center is part of the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites (ISOS). The history of the Simplon region dates back to Roman times and before, the Pass with its highest point of 2.005 m being relatively easy to cross. Over the centuries the Simplon region has seen the passage of armies at war, pilgrimages, transportation of goods and crowds of tourists. The landscape, with its fauna and flora different from other agricultural areas, is unique. Agriculture is considered fundamental to the life of the mountain community.

In addition, there are businesses established in Simplon Dorf, such as construction companies, carpentry, transport companies and other businesses in the building sector. Permanent jobs are also available at the power generating plant, the district forestry service, maintenance of cantonal roads and the armed forces. Primary schools are conducted in the village.
